How a Fantasy Creature Helped Kids Fight COVID-19

How do you explain a global pandemic to a child? During the height of the COVID-19 crisis, this was a challenge faced by parents and caregivers everywhere. To help, a coalition of more than 50 humanitarian organizations, including the World Health Organization, came together to create a unique resource: a children’s storybook titled, “My Hero is You, How kids can fight COVID-19!”

The book features a fantasy creature named Ario, who guides children through the confusing and often frightening realities of the pandemic. It explains in age-appropriate terms how they can protect themselves, their families, and their friends from the coronavirus, empowering them to be active participants in their own health and safety.

By translating complex public health concepts into a narrative of heroism and mutual care, the project underscores a vital aspect of healthcare: communication. It’s not enough to have the right medical information; that information must be delivered in a way that patients—even the youngest ones—can understand and act upon.

At Medicup, we see this as a powerful parallel to the mission of digital health. While our platform provides the technology for virtual consultations and secure health management, the ultimate goal is to foster clearer communication and deeper understanding between providers and patients. Tools like telehealth can help clinicians check in on a child's mental and emotional well-being, offering a space to discuss the very fears that books like “My Hero is You” aim to soothe. Supporting a family’s health means caring for the whole person, and that begins with meeting them where they are, whether through a storybook or a screen.
