In response to this emerging threat, a new work group has been formed by the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) to address the cybersecurity risks of the most advanced “frontier” AI models.
Co-chaired by industry and academic leaders from Microsoft, Johns Hopkins, and MITRE, the group will focus on a dual challenge. First, it will develop strategies to defend against malicious actors who could use frontier AI to generate highly realistic phishing emails or novel malware targeting healthcare systems. Second, it will explore how these same powerful AI tools can be leveraged by organizations to bolster their own cybersecurity defenses.
The primary output of the work group will be a series of practical “playbooks” designed to guide healthcare organizations. These resources will provide actionable steps for protecting sensitive patient data and critical infrastructure from a new generation of AI-powered threats, while also addressing potential vulnerabilities within the AI models themselves.
